Merletti

Ove Thorsen and Birgitta Karlsson

The group of vases is made of ply glass with white decoration, corroded with acid according to a floral design so as to bring out only the layer of crystal. In this processing phase the object is called "Suppio", the object is then heated again and plied in crystal. This technique with a cold phase between two hot phases, of Nordic origin and unusual for Murano, made it possible to obtain vases of singular beauty, in harmony with the taste of the early seventies. Acid processing can no longer be performed at present, but thanks to the discovery of some "Suppi" originating from the time, it was possible to finish them with jacketing in 2019.

a) "Merletto" vase in blown glass with cased white decoration.
b) Bottle-shaped "Merletto" in blown glass with white jacketed decoration
c) Cup-shaped "Merletto" in blown glass with white jacketed decoration
